World's On Fire Live at Kendell's, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, 2016-03-20

about

Oklahoma City was one of those shows where nothing seems to go right but it all works out in the end!

After a lot of effort contacting a lot of bands who said they were interested and then never wrote back to us, we had lined up two local bands to play with us, one of which was supposed to bring a PA because the venue (Kendell's) didn't have one. Then they both cancelled shortly before the show--by "shortly before," I mean one of them cancelled the morning of the show, while we were driving up from Austin to OKC. Strep throat and a broken arm.

So there we were, on the way up to OKC, with no PA and no local support, but Kendell asked us to play anyway, and he'd see what he could do. He finally managed to get his friend Lance Arnold, aka Lance Electric, a singer-songwriter, to jump on the bill last-minute and even bring a PA.

The stage was high and narrow, with mirrors behind it and a pole in the middle. We made some jokes about the pole and you can see Nick's fabulous dance moves in action in the photo for this track. But it turned out that the club was indeed a former adult entertainment venue (and still home to the Ladies' Night Male Revue Featuring the Hottest Hunks of OKC) so those were some LEGIT SEXY poles and mirrors.

We played to a small but appreciative crowd and enjoyed a wonderful selection of Lance Electric's tunes (mostly played on the acoustic guitar, but with ELECTRIC SPIRIT). Kendell made fun of me for trying to order a mixed drink like the bourgeois Yankee scum that I am (it's a beer-only bar) but then he did make me a Lime-A-Rita done up nice in a margarita glass with a salted rim, which was pretty much just as good.

When we went outside later, the wind was blowing in from the stockyards and it smelled very manureific. Oklahoma City sure has a lot of character, as they say.

lyrics

Summer night, sticky hot and molten
Setting sun filling me with golden light
Sets the trees on fire

Shield your eyes
The world's on fire

Palm trees, the California coastline
Freeways stretching on for miles and miles
Headlights like fireflies

Shield your eyes
The world's on fire

We pretended that we were movie stars
With my headscarf and a pair of shades
Took off my heels to run by the water's edge
The cold Pacific washing all my doubts away
Away
Away

Here we go, the story of nothing
You decided I wasn't worth loving anymore
But once, I was adored

Venice Beach, the scene of a murder
If not that, the scene of some other crime
Like wasting my time

Shield your eyes
The world's on fire

And if we'd been lovers on the movie screen
I would have found the magic words to make you stay
Held you while the rubble rained around our heads
And kissed you while the world burned away
Away
Away

In my bed, I lie still and think about
Where you are, and if I just concentrate
I can feel you in space

Palm trees filter the moonlight
I know that there's someone in your arms tonight
The world's on fire
The world's on fire
The world's on fire
